Opportunity for Tropical Cyclone Lifecycle Predictions from Pre-Formation to Ending Stage: Eastern North Pacific 2021 Season

نویسندگان

چکیده

Building on previous studies of western North Pacific formation and intensity predictions along the ECMWF ensemble medium-range track forecasts, first objective this transition to eastern was provide earlier forecasts Time-to-Formation (T2F) Time-to-Hurricane (T2H) than are available from National Hurricane Center Advisories. For six hurricanes 2021 season, detections in were 8 days 12 advance T2F times 9 13 T2H times. The major study has been document that is also capable predicting Ending-T2H Ending-T2F timings positions those 15-day forecasts. This for time documents opportunity high wind warnings during entire lifecycle season even formation. Validations pre-hurricane Ending-hurricane tracks provided lifecycles seven “Almost-Hurricane Guillermo”. Because technique accepted operational testing at Joint Typhoon Warning Center, a companion article submitted will describe flowchart methodology evaluating twice-daily select most likely circulation as early possible while non-selecting false alarm circulations.

A Revised Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification Index for the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific Basins

A revised rapid intensity index (RII) is developed for the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins. The RII uses large-scale predictors from the Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) to estimate the probability of rapid intensification (RI) over the succeeding 24 h utilizing linear discriminant analysis. Separate versions of the RII are developed for the 25-, 30-, and 35-k...

Impact of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity in the North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating weather systems affecting the United States and Central America (USCA). Here we show that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) strongly modulates TC activity over the North Atlantic (NA) and eastern North Pacific (eNP). During positive IPO phases, less (more) TCs were observed over NA (eNP), likely due to the presence of stronger (wea...

Developing versus Nondeveloping Disturbances for Tropical Cyclone Formation. Part II: Western North Pacific*

Global daily reanalysis fields from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) are used to analyze Northern Hemisphere summertime (June–September) developing and nondeveloping disturbances for tropical cyclone (TC) formation from 2003 to 2008. This is Part II of the study focusing on the western North Pacific (WNP), following Part I for the North Atlantic (NATL) basin. T...

Clustering of eastern North Pacific tropical cyclone tracks: ENSO and MJO effects

A probabilistic clustering technique is used to describe tropical cyclone tracks in the eastern North Pacific, based on their shape and location. The best-track dataset is decomposed in terms of three clusters; these clusters are analyzed in terms of genesis location, trajectory, landfall, intensity, seasonality, and their relationships with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Madden-Ju...

Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity and ENSO

The influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific basin is examined. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), constructed from the best-track dataset for the region for the period 1950–2002, and other related variables are analyzed. ACE is positively correlated with ENSO indices. This and other statistics of the interannually varying tr...
